OVERVIEW
Named after Federico Fellini’s semi-autobiographical film, 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana is the Hong Kong outpost of Chef Umberto Bombana’s legendary three-Michelin-starred Italian restaurant. Located in the heart of Central on Pedder Street, this elegant dining room has been a bastion of refined Italian cuisine since 2010 . With its white tablecloths, Murano glass chandeliers, and impeccable service, it transports guests straight to the great dining rooms of Milan or Rome.
Chef Bombana, often called the “Pope of Truffles,” is renowned for his masterful handling of premium ingredients — particularly white and black truffles, which feature prominently in autumn and winter menus. The cuisine is deeply rooted in Italian tradition but elevated with technique and ingredient sourcing that is second to none.
THE LUNCH DEAL
The weekday lunch at 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana is a Central power lunch institution. For a fraction of the dinner price (which often exceeds HK$3,000–$4,000), you can enjoy a three- to four-course tasting menu that showcases the restaurant’s signature elegance. It’s the go-to spot for client meetings, special celebrations, or simply treating yourself to the best Italian food in the city.
The lunch menu changes seasonally, but expect dishes like homemade pasta with Alba white truffles (when in season), tagliolini with Mediterranean langoustines, or roasted pigeon with foie gras and port wine sauce. Dessert is not to be missed — the zabaglione semifreddo is a classic.

WHY IT’S A GREAT DEAL
In a city where a casual Italian dinner for two can easily exceed HK$1,500, a three-course lunch at a three-Michelin-starred restaurant for under HK$1,000 is exceptional value. The portion sizes are generous, the service is polished without being stuffy, and the wine list — one of the best in Asia — offers reasonably priced glasses to accompany your meal.
RESERVATIONS
Highly recommended, especially for weekday lunches. Book at least one to two weeks in advance. Walk-ins are occasionally accommodated at the bar or lounge area, but not guaranteed.

INSIDER TIPS
-
Truffle season (September to December) is the best time to visit — the white truffle pasta is legendary and worth the supplement.
-
The bread basket (served with olive oil from the chef’s own estate in Tuscany) is dangerously good. Pace yourself.
-
If you’re dining alone or with one other person, consider asking for a table in the main dining room — the energy is part of the experience.
-
A corkage fee applies if you bring your own wine; check current rates when booking.
